Featured Horse:

Chalani Clover & Kerry Pincombe

Chalani Clover is a 19 year old mare by Fintona Artist from Henry's Bindi Lass. She has been used for many years at Pony Club with various riders (mounted games, jumping, eventing) as well as Riding Club with current owner Kerry Pincombe. Kerry has also evented and jumped Clover.

Kerry says she is a very straight forward horse, easy to handle and lovely to trail ride.

Clover is a very true to type ASH of Chan / Cecil Bruce bloodlines and stands 15.1-15.2hh.

Kerry has been kind enough to allow Chalani to lease Clover to breed with. She will be bred to Chalani Sunstream this season.

2012 Wrap up

We've had some fantastic highs this year with show ring success at National, interstate and local competitions. Highlights were winning the 4yo and under hack class at the ASH National Show and Champion working Junior ASH at the Western Victorian Branch Show with Chalani Minerva.

On the other side of things, we've had some not so great luck. Nuniong Beebie slipped her foal prior to breeding season. We lost the mare Chalani Paper Lace a few days after foaling her colt Chalani Tweed at the end of September. Fortunately Chalani Laura foaled the same night and we were able to get her to foster Tweed whilst also feeding her own foal Chalani Maitland (pictured). Another devastating loss was in November, of the beautiful 2012 filly Chalani Artemis (Chalani Chaparral x Chalani Aurora). Vet suggested an insect bite may have been the cause, coinciding with very hot weather, but we will never know for sure.

We have four foals for sale, the filly Chalani Believe and 3 colts, Chalani Hamlet, Chalani Tweed and Chalani Maitland. The colt foal Chalani Tempo (Chalani Nightdance x Chalani Pivot) is already sold and he will go on to stand at stud in his new home down the track.

Jeanette purchased a new mare 'Caralta Paris' who is by Riverview Snowman. She has produced a colt foal by McNamara Report and will remain in NSW until she is in foal to Arakoola Tradition.

The young colt Chalani Sunstream started breeding mares this season and we eagerly await the next stud season to see what he will produce. Six mares are confirmed in foal to him, with 5 foals expected by Splashdance (this includes visiting mares).

The following mares have tested in foal for Chalani: Chalani Aurora and Chalani Clover to Sunny; Chalani Jive and Chalani Giselle to Splash; Mossroses Galica to Chalani Nightdance. If you have a particular interest in any of these crosses, please put in your expression of interest to chalani@chalani.net with any gender/colour specifications.

We have entered Minerva, Sunstream and Sangria for the 2013 Adelaide Royal Breeds, the first weekend in March. This will be the first Adelaide Royal Breeds show of this kind.

We have had a number of our horses confirmed as being Heritage Stock Horse (HSH) with the Australian Stock Horse Society. This includes Chalani Sunstream, Chalani Aurora (and progeny), Chalani Laura (and progeny by Splashdance), Nuniong Beebie and daughter Chalani Sangria and Caralta Paris. We aim to direct our breeding along HSH lines.

If you would like more news of our horses and plenty of photos (more than we can keep up with on the Chalani website), please visit our facebook page. It is open to be viewed by anyone.

We wish all our family, friends and clients every success in 2013.

Dilutes Championship Show

Another successful show day for Chalani Minerva and Chalani Sunstream, on the 16 Dec. The Dilutes committee held breed classes in addition to the feature Dilutes Championship ring (with interstate judge from QLD).

Minerva won Supreme Champion Led ASH (going up against Sunstream who won Junior Champion led) and also won Supreme Champion ASH (she was Champion Working and Res Champion Hack to Hillbro Second Addition, by Chalani Chaparral).

In the Dilutes ring, Sunny was Grand Champion Palomino, Futurity winner and also won Best palomino colour and True to type. In the True to type class, judges pick the type that best represents qualities of the breed the handler specifies.

West Vic ASH Branch Show

We attended at the Western Victorian ASH Branch Show on 24/25 Nov 2012, with Chalani Minerva.
We had a very successful show and met some lovely people, as well as catching up with some we already knew.

October activities

SACB branch show

We had a lovely day at the ASH SA Central Branch 40th Anniversary show, held on Oct 28 at Strathalbyn Polo Grounds. There were super entries at this show with many big classes.

1st Chalani Sunstream in his under 2yrs colt/gelding (also 1st Best presented)
2nd Chalani Maia in her 3yrs filly (her first ever show)
RESERVE CHAMPION led: Chalani Minerva, (1st 4yo & over mare) who was also Res Ch Hack (1st Open Hack) and Res Ch Working as well as second in the Open Challenge. Hard to be more "all-round" than that!

In one hack class, three Chalani horses placed first (Minerva), second (Auster), and third (Opera).
Minerva is pictured winning the Stockman's Turnout class.

Keith Campdraft

Kim rode in her first ever campdraft with Chalani Trivia also at her first ever campdraft (and only 2nd time working cattle). They managed an outside score for their 2nd run (maiden campdraft) and Trivia showed that she has some ability on cattle. Plan is to try our luck at the local Strathalbyn Campdraft in January 2013.

Show successes

At the Dilutes Classic show held at Kersbrook Equestrian Centre on 16 Sept, Chalani Silk was Grand Champion dilute in Ring 2 and Reserve Champion palomino mare in Ring 1. Silk also placed in her classes under saddle, these being the first time she has competed in ridden classes at a Dilutes show.

At Murray Bridge Ag Show, Chalani Trivia was Champion Working hunter in the Working Hunter horse 75cms and also the Working Hunter open 80cms (this class is relatively new in Australia, based on the UK format, with a jumping round and then a flat workout). Trivia also picked up two royal show qualifying wins in the Show Hunter classes.

New foals

We have new foals. Chalani Artemis (pic left - from Chalani Aurora by Chalani Chaparral), born 3 Aug 2012 is a bay filly and will be retained by the stud. Chalani Believe (pic right - from Demjarlee Poppit (aka Kizzy) by Splashdance), born 15 Aug 2012 is a brown filly (likely going grey) and will be offered for sale.

Chalani Pivot foaled a black colt named Chalani Tempo on 17 Sep 2012 and Chalani Giselle foaled a black colt named Chalani Hamlet on 18 Sept 2012.

We are expecting 2 more foals in the next 2 weeks, from Chalani Paper Lace and Chalani Laura.

SA Central Branch High Point Awards

Congratulations to Belinda Battersby and Chalani Opera on their high point wins at the SA Central Branch High Point Awards presentation, held 30 June 2012 in Mt Barker.

Opera and Belinda won the Rannock Trophy (high point ridden ASH horse), First Season Trophy, Skyview Mare Trophy and runner up in the ASHLA (Australian Stock Horse and Lady Rider Association).

Congratulations also to Mel Morris who owns a grandson of Splashdance, Ashborns Nightlife, who was the winner of the Memphis Park Young Horse Trophy under 4 years. Runner up went to Chalani Callana, owned by Belinda Battersby.

Jeanette Gower is pictured presenting the Rannock trophy to Belinda Battersby.

SA State ASH Futurity / Maturity Show 2012

We took 3 horses to the SA State Futurity show, held at Murray Bridge Riding Club grounds. The show had lovely prizes and good organisation. Many South East Branch ASH members attended the show and participated in the Challenge, in addition to SA Central Branch members.

Triva was placed 2nd overall in the 5yo Maturity (led, hack, working, time trial) and 2nd in the Open Challenge (Working, Utility, Barrel race, Keyhole race). She was also awarded the Best Led SA bred ASH (1 to 5 years old).

Minerva won the 3yo Futurity, including winning each section (led, hack, working). Sunstream was placed 3rd in his Yearling Colt/Gelding Futurity and demonstrated a sensible temperament all day, even with Minerva showing in season.

ASH National Show 2012

Kim, Andy and Ashton Ide and Jeanette Gower attended the 2012 National ASH Show in Tamworth with Chalani Trivia and Chalani Minerva (pic right). The journey took 2 and a half long days, with rising flood waters throughout NSW meaning waters were crossed over the road along with an alternative route forced on the way home.

The trip was well worth making however, with Minerva winning the Hack English Attire 4 years and under and placing 4th Led filly 3 years, 3rd Pleasure Hack, 5th Hack filly 3 years, =5th Novice Hack 4 years and under, =3rd Novice Working 4 years and under and 5th Working filly 3 years. Chalani Trivia placed 3rd in Preliminary Dressage and 4th Hack English Attire, 5 years and over, over 15hh. Classes were huge with 30-40 horses frequently in each event, especially the 4 years and under sections.

Some photos are on the ASH National Show 2012 photo gallery with professional photos to be added once available.

Chalani Opera owned by Belinda Battersby.

Chalani Opera is owned by Belinda Battersby of Scott Creek, SA. She has been successfully performed in ASH competition, including 1st Ridden ASH Mare Adelaide Royal 2011 and 3rd in the Led ASH mare. From dressage and ANSA classes, to Show Jumping and novelties at the Masters Games with a swag of medals, Opera has been a great and consistent allrounder for Belinda.

She is on track to high point awards in the SA Central Branch, attending many ASH Highpoint shows in 2011. She was Champion Ridden ANSA and Reserva Champion ASH Hack (to Chalani Minerva) at Northern Hack and Halter show 2011. We look forward to hearing more of the enjoyment the pair have together.

Opera is a full sister to the stallions Nightdance and Playwright, the gelding Actor and the mares Dance and Ballet (By Splashdance from Chalani Giselle). This has proven to be a particularly successful cross.

Cattle Working Clinic

Chalani Trivia and Kim Ide attended a beginners Cattle Working Clinic in Tintinara on 14/15th Jan 2012. An excellent clinic with basic principles covered, such as - how to select a cow, where to place your horse when cutting a cow, when to call for the 'gate' and where to position the horse once 'outside' to make the cow go faster or turn.

Some photos are on Chalani Trivia's page or under the cattle work photo gallery.
